Ritalin is a very familiar drug, and is probobly best known for treating children who experience hyperactivity. In addition to Ritalin being used for specific reasons and given only by a doctor's prescription, abuse of the drug have become very popular in producing powerful stimulant effects on a person. The prescription tablets themslves produce a very mild stimulant effect when taken, and when injected like heroin, or crushed and snorted like cocaine, it produces a powerful stimulant effect and can cause serious health problems. Today ritalin is being snorted or injected and producing heroin-like stimulant effects. Snorting or injecting ritalin is the latest fad in the use of stimulant drugs and is often compared to the heavy use of Speed in the late 60's. NON-MEDICAL USE The ritalin tablet is made with the intention of oral use, however, not to give any ideas, people have taken it upon themselves to try crushing the tablet and snorting the resulting powder, and/or dissolving the tablet in water and cooking it for an intravenous injection. Ritalin is ONLY suppose to be used for the treatment of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and narcolepsy. Ritalin is a Schedule II Controlled Substance under Indiana and federal Acts. Ritalin effects the central nervous system as a stimulant. It was found to have worked by activating the brain stem and cortex and often reflects stimulant characteristics of cocaine. Even when ritalin is taken by prescription, it provides the chance of a person forming a dependence and tolerance to the drug. When taking ritalin, your doctor should be keeping an eye on any of the effects of the drug that could become present, such as: -severe depression with withdrawal -loss of appetite -vomiting -dizziness, headaches -nervousness and/or insomnia -heart rate and blood pressure change -weight loss, abdominal pain, and digestive problems -psychosis, psychotic episodes, and drug dependence - paranoia, hallucinations, and delusions - tremors and involuntary muscle twitching Further complications from injecting ritalin include: - drug overdose - blood clots - infections such as blood poisoning, hepatitis, AIDS, etc. Complications from snorting ritalin may include these things because of the acid present in the drug: - acid burning nasal tissue, resulting in open sores, deterioration of nasal cartilage, and nose bleeds | |||||||||||||||||||||||

Being that ritalin is a Schedule II Controlled Substance, distributing or deling in the drug is considered a class A felony. Found in possession of ritalin without a prescription can lead to prision time for up to 45 years and a fine of up to $10,000. |
